Trying hard to win ... 2000

We hope everyone who took part enjoyed this year's Yuletide diversion. Congratulations to everyone who sent in right answers, and commiserations if you knew the answer but just missed the boat because the folk named below were so quick on the draw … there's a nice mixed metaphor for you [the dozen nearest-misses in order were Anthony R, Pierre G, Sam B, William L, Carrie and John M, Richard M, Bob J, Dave W, Bob R, Jim K, Howard C and Joan M … ]

So here are the names (and the international origins!) of the magnificent eleven who led the field: 'first in' got first choice of prize, 'second in' got their highest choice still available, and so on: since competitors were invited to specify the prizes they favoured, a gratifyingly large proportion got high-position choices.
